Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala which
formerly known as Trivandrum is gateway to one of the most beautiful Indian
states, Kerala. Stretching along the southern coast of the country, with the
Backwaters reaching deep into the verdant countryside, Kerala affords a
fascinating experience. The city of the Thousand - headed Anatha, the holy
serpent on which Lord Vishnu reclines. Trivandrum is one of the most
beautiful cities of India. Perched on undulating terrain of low coastal
hills near the southern edge of the Indian mainland, clean and green
Trivandrum, which was previously called Trivandrum, is an ancient city with
trading tradition dateing back to 1000 BC.

Sri
Padmanabha Swamy temple is located 1 Km from the Central Railway station,
Trivandrum. The
temple, known for the Mural paintings and stone carvings is one among the
108 temples dedicated to Vishnu in India. A magnificent array of gods,
goddesses, nymphs, sprites and demons adorn the seven-storey 'gopuram' that
forms the temple tower. Outside the temple courtyard, there is a medley of
shops that sell souvenirs, handicrafts, woodcarvings and handiwork of
sandal. One can witness the craftsmen do their work right from carving the
wood to polishing

Observatory/Zoologocial
Garden

This
is one of the oldest observatories in the country. The observatory is
located opposite the eastern gate of the Government Museum and has a well
laid garden.
Zoological gardens
The
zoo in Thiruvananthapuram is one of the oldest and best in the country. It
has a wide verity of fauna including overseas specimens. The zoo set among
woodlands and lakes, beautifully landscaped, is a natural habitat for the
animals.

State S & T Museum
|
The
Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, established in 1984, is
situated close to the Napier museum and the Postmaster General's Office in Thiruvananthapuram.
It serves as a dynamic medium of science communication and the activities
are aimed at popularisation of science among the common man especially
students. This is a study-cum-recreation center and an important tourist
attraction. The museum aims at setting up of galleries with
working/animated and participatory type of exhibits, on all disciplines of
science and technology. Organizing and conducting mobile and temporary
science exhibitions and competitions along with science film shows and
conducting science educational programmes through TV, radio and other media
of communication are some of its objectives.
A
rare collection of electronic components are displayed at the Electronics
Engineering Gallery. Visitors can acquire information about the natural
form of electricity, its generation, distribution, application and usage
with the help of various exhibits at the Electrical Engineering Gallery.
Educative medical and bio-medical film shows and interactive working models
of bio-medical equipments along with animation graphics on computers and
digital announcement systems are the major highlights of the Bio-Medical
Engineering Gallery. Interactive models on basic mathematical principles
and number spectrum are exhibited at the Mathematical Puzzle Corner.

Neyyar
Dam is situated around 32 km east of Thiruvananthapuram. It is a popular
picnic spot with a lake and a picturesque dam site. This area has some of
the rarest medicinal herbs in Kerala. The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary was
established in 1958. Covering a total area of 128 sq km, it is located at
the foot of the Western Ghats. The sanctuary, of which the dam is a part,
is the habitat of over a hundred rare species of fauna including elephants,
wild buffaloes, wild boars, porcupines, tigers and a variety of snakes.
It
is the drainage basin for the Neyyar River and its tributaries - Mullayar
and Kallar. The sanctuary has a wide variety of vegetation and landscape,
ranging from tropical wet evergreen forest to grasslands. The best way to
explore the sanctuary is by boat.

It
is located near the Napier Museum,
and displays select paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Svetlova and Nicholas
Roerich and exquisite works from Rajput, Mughal and Tanjore schools of art
in India. The collection also includes paintings from China, Japan, Tibet
and Bali

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

Kuthiramalika
(Puthenmalika) Palace Museum built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama
Varma - the King of Travancore, who was an art lover and a social reformer
of that time. This rare specimen of workmanship in the traditional
Travancore style of architecture also has exquisite wood carvings. The
palace museum displays paintings and various priceless collections of the
royal family and is located near the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple

The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The
Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary of which the dam is a part is the habitat of over
a hundred rare species of fauna including elephants, wild buffaloes, wild
boar, porcupines, tigers and a variety of snakes. A crocodile breeding
centre and a lion safari park are also located in the dam site. Boating
facility is the best way to explore complete vicinity.

This
palace in the heart of Trivandrum city is one of the most beautiful
buildings. The palace and its sprawling grounds are today the venue for
many cultural meets. The Museum building is an architectural splendour. The
napier museum, the natural history museum, the reptile house and the Shri
Chitra Art Gallery are in the same complex amidst a well laid out garden
and park.

An
exciting place for picnics, the Veli Tourist Village is built near the Veli
lagoon fringed with greenery and easily accessible by road. Veli is located
8 kms from Thiruvananthapuram city. The village provides an excellent
atmosphere for relaxing.
A
beautifully landscaped garden and facilities for swimming, boating, etc, on
the placid waters of the lake attract hundreds of visitors everyday.
The
village is borded by Veli lagoon and Arabian sea which makes it one of the
picturesque location. The lagoon is separated from the sea by narrow sand
bar. Besides water sports, am 18 acre waterfront park with floating bridge
connects the village to the Shankhumukham beach and also there is a
children's park around the floating bridge.
The
village is now open from 10 am to 8 pm.

The
Napier Museum was established by the ruler of Travancore in 1855 and is
named after the then Madras Governor, General John Napier. Chisholm, its
British architect, combined Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian styles of
architecture in his design. This architectural splendour has a natural air
conditioning system which keeps the museum pleasant in any weather.
Napier
Museum houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic artifacts,
bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot, ivory carvings and
life-size Kathakali dancers. The figurines preserved here amply illustrate the
varying features of South-Indian sculpture from the 8th to 18th century.
Napier
Museum forms part of the attractions within the Museum premises such as the
Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Trivandrum Zoo and Natural History Museum.
Timings
: Open from Tuesdays to Sundays - 10 am to 4.45 pm. On Wednesdays, the
museum opens only at 1 pm.
